![]() This type of submarine is quieter, larger, and faster than others. The Seawolf Class of Submarines (SSN), also known as Los Angeles Class, replaced the Los Angeles Class of Submarines in 1983. Navy operates four types of submarines: Los Angeles, Ohio, Seawolf, and Virginia. Their surface is generally 600 feet below the ocean’s surface. There are several types of submarines, depending on the jargon used. The term submarine refers to a vehicle designed to travel to depths below the ocean’s surface. If a submarine did go deeper than 1,500 meters, it is almost certain that it would implode. It is possible that a submarine could go even deeper than 1,500 meters, but it is unlikely that it would be able to withstand the pressure. The hull of a submarine is designed to withstand a certain amount of pressure, but it is unclear if it can withstand the pressure at these depths. At these depths, the pressure is immense and the water density is incredibly high. It is thought that the limit is somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 meters. ![]() While the K-162 was able to withstand the pressure at great depths, it is not clear how much deeper a submarine can go before it would implode. It is believed that the K-162 imploded at a depth of around 1,000 meters. The submarine suffered significant hull damage and one crew member was killed. ![]() The record depth was not without its problems, however. This is the equivalent of 36.2 atmospheres of pressure and a water density of more than 1,000 kg/m3. The deepest recorded depth for a submarine is 923 meters, set by the Russian submarine K-162 in 1970. At these depths, the pressure is about 4 atmospheres and the water density is about 10 times that of surface water. The average submarine is designed to withstand the pressure at depths of up to 400 meters.
